Iniziò a strimpellare la chitarra di suo padre intorno ai 6 anni. A 7 venne in possesso della sua prima chitarra elettrica, una Winston. Dopo poco tempo la sostituì con una Fender Mustang. A 9 anni ebbe la sua prima band, chiamata “The Yellow Brick Road”. Suonavano canzoni come “Wild Thing” e “Louie Louie” e non erano male per essere un gruppo di ragazzini di quarta elementare. Alle scuole superiori ebbe una band chiamata “Legend”. La chitarra era una Gibson L6-S. Il repertorio comprendeva Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Montrose, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Marshall Tucker Band e altre band degli anni ‘70. Il tastierista era Dave Mathews, che più tardi avrebbe suonato con Tower of Power, Boz Skaggs e Etta James. Il gruppo successivo erano i “New Legend” e decisero di addentrarsi nel Jazz/Rock fusion, scrivendo da sé i propri pezzi e proponendo cover di motivi di Jeff Beck, Return to Forever, George Duke, Herbie Hancock e di altri artisti del panorama Fusion anni ’70. Il tastierista di questa band era John Seppala, che recentemente ha suonato ed ha collaborato con Stef alla stesura della maggior parte dei pezzi dell’ album “Swamp tea”. Solitamente i “New Legend” sbalordivano gli spettatori: nonostante fossero così giovani interpretavano pezzi veramente complicati.

Nel 1979 Stef entrò a far parte della sua prima vera band: gli “Omega”. In quel periodo suonava una Gibson Les Paul Standard. Questa band era composta da Bill e Reni Slais, ex membri della Elvin Bishop Band, e da Mickey Thomas, che più tardi ebbe successo con gli “Starship”. Gli “Omega” erano una grande funk band con trombe tipo “Tower of Power”, e in quegli anni lavorarono molto. Nel 1982 Stef collaborò con Jesse Colin Young, precedentemente appartenente ai “Youngbloods”. Insieme girarono l’America per circa un anno; ciò condusse ad un lavoro con Pablo Cruise nel 1983. Con loro fece un album chiamato “Out of Our Hands” e un tour negli Stati Uniti. Nel 1984/85 fu il turno di Sheila E. e il tempo di una piccola trasformazione, consistente in capelli biondi, costumi luccicanti e passi di danza. Per due anni interpretò il funk prodotto da Prince attraverso America, Giappone ed Europa. Stef suonò in due album di Sheila E.: “Romance 1600” e “Sheila E.”. Inoltre, in due lati “B”: “Too Sexy”, nel quale collaborò alla stesura, e “Save the People”. “Quelli furono grandi giorni” dice Stef. “Imparai un sacco da Prince riguardo la chitarra funk.”. Furono l’atto introduttivo al Tour di Prince “Purple Rain”. Nella band di Sheila E. vi era al basso Benny Rietveld, che più tardi continuò a suonare con Miles Davis e Santana e che ultimamente ha suonato in due canzoni di “Swamp tea”. Nel 1986/87 Stef suonò con i Berlin e andò nuovamente in tour attraverso America, Giappone ed Europa, proprio mentre stavano avendo successo col brano “Take My Breath Away”, tratto dal film “Top Gun”. Nel 1988 andò in tour con Michael Bolton. In questa band suonavano Jonathon Cain alle tastiere e Ross Valory al basso. Sempre nel 1988 fondò una band chiamata “The Vu” con Ross Valory, Prairie Prince, Tim Gorman alle tastiere (che si esibì e registrò con “The Who” e i “Rolling Stones”) e Kevin Chalfant alla voce. Kevin e Ross successivamente continuarono a far parte de “The Storm” con Gregg Rolie (Journey/Santana). L’album “Phoenix Rising” dei “VU” è ora distribuito in tutto il mondo. Nel 1989 Stef si unì ai “Y&T” e con essi registrò 4 album: Ten”, “Yesterday and Today Live”, “Musically Incorrect” e “Endangered Species”. Nell’aprile del 1990 fece un piccolo tour in America con il sassofonista jazz Sadao Watanable, Will Kennedy (batterista dei “Yellowjackets”) e il bassista Keith Jones. Su raccomandazione di Joe Satriani, all’inizio del 1991, ricevette una chiamata da Alice Cooper, che stava cercando un chitarrista per il suo nuovo album. Stef suonò in “Hey Stoopid” e “The Last Temptation”. In “Hey Stoopid” vi erano Mickey Curry alla batteria (Bryan Adams), Hugh McDonald al basso (Bon Jovi) e come chitarristi d’eccezione Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Slash, Vinnie Moore, Mick Mars e Nikki Sixx dei Motley Crue. Ne “The Last Temptation” Stef suonò tutti i brani di chitarra. In quest’album erano presente anche Greg Smith al basso (che più tardi andò in tour con i “Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow” e i “Blue Oyster Cult”) e Derek Sherinian alle tastiere (che suonò con i “Dream Theater”, i “Kiss” e i “Planet X”), entrambi provenienti dalla band del tour di Alice, e Dave Uosikkenen alla batteria. Fecero tour in tutto il mondo e in America con Judas Priest e i “Motorhead”. Ebbero anche una parte nel film di successo “Waynes World”. Stef suonò con Alice dal 1991 al 1995, quando si esibirono in Sud America nel tour “Monsters of Rock” con Ozzy Osborne, i “Megadeth” e i “Faith No More” e ancora nel 1998 negli Stati Uniti. Durante la sua collaborazione con Alice Cooper, Vasco Rossi dopo aver ascoltato il brano “Hey Stoopid” di Alice con Stef alla chitarra e successivamente dopo aver visto un concerto di Cooper, rimase “impressionato” dal sound di Burns e lo contattò per una sessione di registrazione per l’album “Gli Spari Sopra” del 1993. Successivamente il suo primo live con Vasco è a San Siro in “Rock Sotto L’Assedio” nel 1995. Da oltre 13 anni Stef fa parte del gruppo di Vasco Rossi, e continua tuttora a colorare con le sue indiscusse qualita’ chitarristiche gli assoli principali di quasi tutte le canzoni del “Blasco”, emergendo maggiormente rispetto all’altro chitarrista e amico di sempre di Vasco, Maurizio Solieri. La chitarra preferita ed anche la più usata da Stef, e’ una Fender Stratocaster Custom Shop 1991 di color Crema (vedi sotto la sua descrizione dettagliata). Parlando di Stef Burns, Vasco ha dichiarato che, secondo la sua opinione, è il migliore chitarrista al mondo, ed è uno dei pochi capace di commuoverlo con la chitarra. Stef suona inoltre con la band Huey Lewis & The News dal 2000 da quando cioè sostituì Chris Hayes alla chitarra dopo il ritiro di quest’ultimo.

Sono abbastanza rare le apparizioni di Stef Burns in programmi o trasmissioni televisive. Uno di questi fu il “VH-1 Honors” dove Stef si esibì con Stevie Wonder, Steve Winwood, James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Nile Rodgers, and Narada. Un altro fu in Giappone in occasione del “Super Producers Tour 1995” con Narada Michael Walden, nel quale furono presenti anche Patti Austin, Sheila E., Mickey Thomas, Shanice Wilson, Tevin Campell, T.M. Stevens, e i membri dei “Weather Report” Joe Zawinul e Alfonso Johnson. Nel 2004 suonò a Catanzaro con Vasco, davanti a 400.000 spettatori in onda su Italia 1. Nel 1999 e nel 2009 suonò con Vasco durante il concerto del Primo Maggio in onda sulle reti Rai. L’ultima apparizione video di Stef è stata al Jimmy Kimmel Live show, sulla ABC, sul palco con i News, Novembre 2009. Dal 1989 Stef ha una sua band, “Stef Burns Group”. I membri sono stati negli anni molti dei musicisti menzionati prima,hanno compreso anche Myron Dove al basso (Santana/Robben Ford) e Billy Johnson alla batteria (Santana/Robben Ford).

Per le esibizioni in Italia Stef Burns si avvale della collaborazione del batterista olandese Juan van Emmerloot, del bassista olandese Michel van Schie e del tastierista triestino Fabio Valdemarin.

Nel 2004, durante il “Buoni o Cattivi Tour” di Vasco, Stef è stato invitato a suonare al G3 con Joe Satriani, Steve Vai e Robert Fripp. Parlando di quella notte Stef la descrive come una delle piu belle della sua vita.

Nel 2005, insieme al chitarrista acustico Peppino D’Agostino, pubblica un disco contenente 10 brani dal titolo Bayshore Road, cui fa seguito un tour negli USA prima e in Italia poi, nella primavera 2005 e nell’inverno 2006.

Di recente pubblica l’ultimo disco, “World, Universe, Infinity”. Il disco contiene 10 pezzi, interamente scritti da Stef, ad eccezione del numero 9, ovvero della cover di un brano di Hendrix, Little Wing. Il chitarrista californiano si dimostra anche un valido cantante in questa occasione. Il 2008 è un anno molto positivo dal punto di vista lavorativo. Impegnato in febbraio e marzo in Italia con il tuor promozionale del disco “World Universe Infinity”, lo interrompe in estate per prendere parte al tour “Vasco.08” di Vasco Rossi a giugno. Successivamente suonerà con Huey Lewis and the News ad agosto. A settembre, conclusi questi ultimi concerti, ripartirà il tour dello Stef Burns Group e sempre a settembre, Stef riparte con Vasco per la seconda parte del tour “Vasco.08”. Il 28 settembre, dopo aver suonato a Bari con Vasco Rossi, Stef accetta di partecipare ad un concerto in ricordo di un giovane cantante barese, fan di Vasco. A gennaio 2009 esce il secondo singolo tratto da “World, Universe, Infinity”: Space Time seguito, a febbraio e marzo, dallo “Space Time Tour ’09”, ovvero il secondo atto del tour di promozione del disco. Ad aprile suona in 4 Clinics nel nord Italia ed infine il Primo maggio 2009 si esibisce in Piazza S.Giovanni a Roma con Vasco, davanti ad 800.000 spettatori. Ritornato in America, suona con Huey Lewis and the News nel tour estivo, da giugno a settembre. A settembre 2009, Stef è di nuovo in Italia, impegnato per le prove del “Vasco Europe Indoor Tour 2009”, che lo porterà in giro nei palazzetti di tutta Italia e di alcune capitali europee, e per l’attività di Clinic e seminari. A dicembre, libero da impegni, gira l’Italia in un tour di 8 date con lo Stef Burns Group, denominato “the DVD experience tour”, atto a pubblicizzare il DVD live registrato al Lapsus di Torino il 5 marzo 2009 ed intitolato: Stef Burns Group In Concert – World, Universe, Infinity… LIVE!!! per la UltraTempo Records.

Stef Burns was born in Oakland, California, and grew up in Walnut Creek, CA, where he attended Northgate High School. He started playing his Dad’s guitar around age 6. At 7 he got his first electric guitar which was a Winston. He upgraded to a Fender Mustang soon after. He had his first band when he was 9 years of age called “The Yellow Brick Road”. They played songs like “Wild Thing” and “Louie Louie” and weren’t bad for a bunch of fourth graders.
In high school, he had a band called “Legend” and by then was playing a Gibson L6-S. They played Allman Bros., Lynyrd Skynyrd, Montrose, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Marshall Tucker Band and other 70’s stuff. The keyboard player was Dave Mathews who later went on to play with Tower of Power, Boz Skaggs and Etta James.

The next band was great. They called it “New Legend” and started to get into Jazz/Rock fusion, writing their own songs and covering tunes by Jeff Beck, Return to Forever, George Duke, Herbie Hancock and other 70’s Fusion stuff. The keyboard player in this group was John Seppala who now co-writes and plays with Stef on most of his new album,”Swamp tea”. They used to blow people’s minds because they were so young and were playing all this intricate material.
The first real club band was Omega. It was 1979. Stef was now playing a Les Paul Standard. This was a band formed by ex-Elvin Bishop band members Bill And Reni Slais, and Mickey Thomas who later had many hits with Starship. Omega was a large funk band, with horns like Tower of Power, very funky and worked a lot. In 1982, he got a job with Jesse Colin Young, formerly of the Youngbloods.
They toured America for about a year and that led to a job with Pablo Cruise in 1983. He did one album with them called “Out Of Our Hands” and a US tour. Then came Sheila E. It was 1984/85 and time for a little transformation, complete with blonde hair, shiny costumes and dance steps for days.
For two years he played the Prince produced funk across America, Japan and Europe. Stef played on two Sheila E. albums: “Romance 1600” and “Sheila E.”. Also, two B-sides: “Too Sexy”, which he co-wrote, and “Save the People”.
“This was a great time,” says Stef. “I learned a lot from Prince about funk guitar.” They were the opening act for Prince’s “Purple Rain Tour”.
In Sheila’s band there was: Benny Reitveld on bass, who later went on to play with Miles Davis and Santana (with whom he is now playing with for a second go-around) and plays on two songs on “Swamp tea”.
In 1986/87, Stef played with Berlin and toured again through America, Japan and Europe while they had the hit “Take My Breath Away” from the film “Top Gun”.
In 1988, he toured with Michael Bolton. In this band there was Jonathon Cain on keyboards and Ross Valory on bass from Journey.
Also in 1988 he co-formed a band called The VU, with Ross Valory, Prairie Prince (The Tubes) Tim Gorman on keyboards (toured and recorded with The Who and Rolling Stones), and Kevin Chalfant-Vocals. Kevin and Ross later went on to form The Storm with Gregg Rolie-(Journey/Santana). The album, “Phoenix Rising” by the VU is now released throughout the world.

In 1989 Stef joined Y&T and recorded 4 albums with them: “Ten”,”Yesterday and Today Live”, “Musically Incorrect” and “Endangered Species”.
In April 1990, he played a short tour in America with jazz saxaphonist Sadao Watanabe also featuring Will Kennedy-(drummer for the Yellowjackets) and bassist Keith Jones. On a recommendation from Joe Satriani, in early 1991, he got a call from Alice Cooper, who was looking for a guitarist for his new album. Stef played on “Hey Stoopid” and “The Last Temptation”. On “Hey Stoopid” there was Mickey Curry – drums (Bryan Adams), Hugh McDonald – bass (Bon Jovi) and guest guitarists Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Slash, Vinnie Moore, Mick Mars and Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue. On “The Last Temptation”, Stef played all the guitars. This album also featured Greg Smith on bass (who later went on to tour with Richie Blackmore’s Rainbow and Blue Oyster Cult) and Derek Sherinian on keyboards (who played with Dream Theater, Kiss and Planet X) both from Alice’s touring band, and Dave Uosikkenen on drums. They toured the world and in America with Judas Priest and Motorhead. They also had a part in the hit film “Waynes World”. Stef played with Alice from 1991 to 1995, when they toured South America on the “Monsters of Rock” tour with Ozzy Osborne, Megadeth and Faith No More, and again in 1998 in the US. By now he is mostly playing Fender Strats.

He spent much of 1996 and 1999 touring Italy with an Italian artist named Vasco Rossi with Deen Castronovo on drums. In 2001, he is touring again with Vasco in Italy. His latest band is Huey Lewis and the News, where he has replaced Chris Hayes on guitar, whom has retired though is going to play with the band again while Stef Is in Italy during part of the summer of 2001.
In addition to these things, Stef is doing albums, TV and radio commercials, film score work and live shows for various artists and producers including, Narada Michael Walden, Quincy Jones, Marc Russo formerly of the Yellowjackets, (who co-wrote and produced a song on “Swamp tea”), and many others. One such live TV show was the “VH-1 Honors” where Stef performed with Stevie Wonder, Steve Winwood, James Taylor, Sheryl Crow, Nile Rodgers, and Narada. Another was in Japan for the “Super Producers Tour 1995” with Narada Michael Walden featuring Patti Austin, Sheila E., Mickey Thomas, Shanice Wilson, Tevin Campell, T.M. Stevens, and Weather Report members Joe Zawinul and Alfonso Johnson. Since about 1989 Stef has had his band “Stef Burns Group”, and plays a lot of gigs around the San Francisco bay area.There’s been different line ups throughout the years. The members have consisted of many of the musicians that were mentioned earlier but also included Myron Dove – Bass (Santana/Robben Ford) Billy Johnson – Drums (Santana/Robben Ford).
