Since at least the mid-15th century, the guitar and its relative instruments the lute and vihuela have been considered vehicles for the performance of popular and art music, and until the 20th century, fingerstyle was the dominant technique of the instruments. Guitarist Laurence Juber has long been a renowned player of the guitar and master of the fingerstyle technique. In his new book, The Evolution of Fingerstyle Guitar, Juber aims to shed light on the history of this iconic technique while transcribing some of the most celebrated works throughout various musical eras.
Covering nearly 500 years of history, Juber breaks The Evolution of Fingerstyle Guitar up based upon the musical eras of the time period: the Renaissance, the Baroque Era, the Classical Era, and the Romantic Era. Throughout each section, Juber combines intricate details about the history and lineage of fingerstyle with beautiful artwork and arrangements in standard notation and tab to create a one-of-a-kind fingerstyle guitar book.
Covering the entirety of Juber’s latest album, Touchstones, the book features 20 matching transcriptions for each song. Works are included from some of the greatest composers of all time, including: Josquin Des Pres, Alonso Mudarra, Gaspar Sanz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Fernando Sor, Johann Kaspar Mertz, Charles de Janon, Vahdah Olcott-Bickford, and more. Online audio tracks of Juber playing each piece are included to give players a chance to listen to how each song should be played.
The audio examples included in The Evolution of Fingerstyle Guitar can be accessed online for download and streaming by using a code found in the book. The audio files include PLAYBACK+, a multi-functional audio player that allows you to slow down audio without changing pitch, set loop points, change keys, and pan left or right.
Laurence Juber is a distinguished solo fingerstyle guitarist and studio musician. Well-known as the lead guitarist in the popular band Wings from 1978-1981, Juber has since appeared on over 25 albums throughout his solo career, and composed music for TV, film, and video game soundtracks, including Happy Days, Dirty Dancing, and Diablo III.
